On November 11, 1998, Tencent was co-founded by five founders: Ma Huateng, Zhang Zhidong, Xu Chenye, Chen Yidan, and Zeng Liqing. It has been 25 years since then, and Tencent has grown to become one of the largest and most successful technology companies in the world.
In celebration of its 25th anniversary, Tencent has launched a new initiative called the Chinese Character Guardian Project. The goal of the project is to use the power of the Internet to promote the protection of Chinese characters.
One of the key aspects of the project is the "Rare Character Collection" mini program. This program allows users to submit rare characters that they have encountered. As of November 10, 2023, more than 25 million people have participated in the program, and a total of 16,800 rare characters have been collected.
After screening by the Electronic Industry Standardization Research Institute of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, a total of 457 out of 16,800 rare characters were screened out that may have practical or cultural value. However, due to the lack of pronunciation, interpretation and use case support, more coding basis is needed before they can be used. Standard inclusion.
On the occasion of the 25th anniversary & the first anniversary of the Chinese Character Guardian Project, Tencent officially launched the "Word Rescue Document" produced using Tencent Document Form to collect more supporting materials for these 457 rare characters.
We noticed that among the 457 words, 328 were used for place names, accounting for 72%; 66 were used for names of people, accounting for 14%.
The Chinese Character Guardian Project is a valuable initiative that will help to protect and preserve Chinese culture. By working together, Tencent and the public can ensure that these rare characters are not lost forever.
