OpenAI is reportedly preparing to launch a groundbreaking autonomous AI agent, code-named “Operator,” which is expected to debut as a research preview and developer tool in January 2025. According to Bloomberg, Operator will mark a significant milestone in AI development, giving users an advanced tool capable of independently navigating and interacting with computer systems.
The anticipated release of Operator is intensifying competition among tech companies in the race to build autonomous AI agents that can control computers directly. Just recently, Anthropic introduced its own “computer use” functionality, and Google is rumored to be releasing a similar feature next month. While OpenAI has not yet disclosed the timing of a consumer release, Operator’s initial launch as a developer tool is expected to accelerate advancements in AI-enabled automation and user assistance.
In a recent Reddit “Ask Me Anything” session, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hinted at the transformative potential of AI agents, stating that “the next giant breakthrough will be agents.” Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s chief product officer, also echoed this sentiment in a press briefing ahead of OpenAI’s Dev Day last month, predicting that “2025 is going to be the year that agentic systems finally hit the mainstream.”
