BYD is selling well in China, but did you know that it is quickly taking over the global market?
According to data from the China Passenger Transport Association, BYD's sales in August reached 175,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 185%, and BYD's sales exceeded 100,000 units for four consecutive months. From January to August this year, the cumulative sales volume of BYD's new cars reached 979,397 units, an increase of 166.9% over the same period, and has approached 1 million units. While domestic sales are rising steadily, BYD is also rapidly advancing its globalization process.
Up to now, BYD has carried out passenger car business in Asia, Europe, America and other regions, and has sold well in many developed countries. It can be said that BYD's passenger cars are almost sold to the North and South Pole and Africa. Among them, the overseas version of the BYD Yuan PLUS model Atto 3 has been launched in Australia, Singapore and other markets, and the first battle has been successful. Take the Australian market as an example. When the BYD Atto 3 was exhibited in a showroom in Brisbane, Australia, in early August, hundreds of people lined up to watch the car.
In the Singapore market, the Atto 3 has already received hundreds of orders of intent from consumers before it was launched, and the popularity of the vehicle exceeded BYD's expectations after the launch. So which overseas markets does BYD enter and which models are sold locally? What is the sales situation in foreign countries, can it compete head-to-head with Tesla?
Enter 18 countries to open 340+ stores in 2025
At present, BYD's passenger vehicles have been listed in developed countries such as Norway, Australia, and Singapore; at the same time, BYD has also deployed passenger vehicle business in Latin America. Public information shows that at present, BYD's passenger car business in foreign countries is almost always in cooperation with well-known local car dealers, and the store distribution network is also constantly expanding. In the Asian market, BYD announced its entry into the Thai market and announced that it will cooperate with dealers to build 31 stores by the end of the year and 70 stores by 2023.
A few days ago, BYD also announced that it will build an electric vehicle factory in Thailand, which is expected to start operation in 2024, with an annual production capacity of about 150,000 vehicles. The vehicles produced will be put into the Thai domestic market, as well as neighboring ASEAN countries and other regions. In the European market, BYD has expanded to Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, and other countries in the original Norwegian market. The sales models will include BYD Tang, Han, and Yuan PLUS (locally named BYD Atto 3).
At present, BYD has established a partnership with European dealer group Hedin Mobility to open showrooms in several local regions to provide electric vehicles to customers in Sweden and Germany. The first BYD models are expected to be delivered to European customers in the fourth quarter of this year. Notably, BYD has opened 51 retail and display stores in Norway alone.
In the Australian market, BYD has a total of 12 exhibition centers, covering all states and territories in Australia (except overseas islands).
In the Latin American market, BYD officially entered the pure electric passenger car market in Brazil in December 2021. Currently, the main models on sale are BYD Tang EV and Han EV, and cooperate with many local dealers such as Eurobike, Saga, and Servopa; By the end of this year, BYD will cooperate with Brazilian dealers to cover 45 major cities in Brazil and plans to have 100 designated dealers by the end of 2023.
In addition, BYD has a passenger vehicle business in Latin America and the Caribbean, including Colombia, Uruguay, Bahamas, Dominican Republic, and Costa Rica. It is worth noting that BYD's North American market is also being deployed. The passenger car page of BYD's US official website shows that it is in the process of being updated.
On the whole, BYD's overseas markets are involved in both developed and developing countries. At present, BYD's overseas models are still dominated by pure electric models from Dynasty.com. In the future, it will also launch marine network models such as dolphins and seals to foreign markets.
Australia is very hot, 600 people apply for experience one day
Since BYD has so many layouts in overseas markets, how about BYD's attention overseas? On August 2 this year, a BYD Atto 3 (BYD Yuan PLUS right-hand drive version) was displayed in a shopping mall in Brisbane, Australia. It is reported that the booth received more than 600 experience applications at that time. Some foreign media also went to experience the car statically. He said bluntly that the number of visitors to BYD Atto 3 is very large, and its lively scene is no less than the heat when Tesla Model 3 was exhibited in the city in 2018.
Afterward, even though there were too many people, the reporter wanted to go to eat first, and wait until after lunch when there were fewer people to get on the bus carefully. But it turned out that there were at least 60 people queuing up after an hour, and the heat continued.
On August 23, a video posted on Youtube showed that there were a lot of people who came to see the car, and they gathered around the car to see the car. The seats in the car were crowded with people, and even the front cover was lifted. The people around were talking about the car.
On September 2, BYD delivered the first Atto 3 to customers, and the Atto 3 was officially launched in the Australian market. The first delivery models were long-range models, and the standard-range models will be produced in China in November 2022.
In terms of models, BYD Atto 3 has launched two models in the Australian market. The standard battery life version starts at 44,300 Australian dollars (about 208,900 yuan), and has a range of 320 kilometers under WLTP conditions; the long battery life version is priced at 47,300 yuan. AUD (about RMB 223,100), the WLTP has a range of 420 kilometers.
Both models use BYD's lithium iron phosphate blade battery; among them, the standard battery life version has a battery capacity of 50.1kWh, and the long battery life version has a battery capacity of 60.4kWh. At present, BYD only has Atto 3 on sale in the Australian market; in addition, BYD will also launch two other new models in the Australian market (probably BYD Dolphin and BYD Seal), which are expected to be launched in the Australian market in December 2022.
Yuan PLUS received 4,000 orders in Australia, which is close to Tesla
The popularity of the show car also brought a large number of orders from the Australian market to BYD. In early August, Australian tram dealer EVDirect (BYD's dealer in the Australian market) said it had received more than 4,000 orders since the BYD Atto 3 went on sale in February. After BYD announced a 23% reduction in service costs some time ago, BYD Atto 3's daily orders doubled.
EV Direct CEO Luke Todd told the Australian media: "The daily order volume in the past 48 hours is twice the average daily order volume before our service fee reduction; the total number of orders has now exceeded 4500." On September 5, the Commonwealth Chamber of Automotive Industries of Australia (FCAI) released new car sales data for August. Throughout August, 95,256 cars were sold in Australia, with new car sales reaching 717,575 from January to August this year.
FCAI chief executive Tony Weber said August sales of electric vehicles rose brightly. “Battery electric vehicle sales were strong in August, with Tesla alone selling 3,397 vehicles. Electric vehicle sales accounted for 4.4% of August, double the same period last year and a record high. Year-to-date, electric vehicle sales accounted for the entire 2% of the market, 7.6% for hybrids, and 0.6% for plug-in hybrids.”
And BYD has received more than 4,500 orders since its listing in July. If compared on a monthly basis, Tesla delivered 3,397 units in August, so BYD's single-model sales of 4,500 units are also remarkable. In August, the Tesla Model 3 was fourth in Australian new car sales, behind the Toyota Hilux, Ford Explorer, and Toyota RAV4, and outsold the Toyota Land Cruiser.
The latest figures show a total of 2380 Model 3s were delivered to customers in August; in addition, Tesla delivered 1017 Model Ys, both of which gave Tesla a 3.6 percent share of Australia's entire new car market in August. Judging from the sales of new cars in Australia in August, Tesla will become a major rival of BYD in Australia. After the BYD Seal is launched in the future, it will start a positive encounter with Tesla Model 3 in the Australian market.
Entering the Singapore market in July, the market is small but hot
It was not until July 8 this year that the Atto 3 officially entered the passenger car market when it was launched in Singapore. According to a July 7 report by Singaporean media "Business Times", Vantage Automotive, BYD's authorized dealer in Singapore, said about 300 people expressed strong interest in the Atto 3, enough to account for the number of vehicles BYD exported to Singapore market this year.
A source told Singapore's The Business Times that BYD had to "adjust" its factory orders; this is what industry insiders say means the car has been more popular than it expected. In the Singapore market, electric vehicles only account for 0.6% of the total market, but the overall proportion of electric vehicles is also increasing. At the beginning of this year, there were fewer than 3,000 electric passenger cars on the road, but between January and May, the number of electric vehicles increased by 1,000. From this point of view, although the Singapore market is not large, BYD Atto 3 has already received more than 300 people's intentions before it is listed, which can also be seen to a certain extent. BYD's hot selling potential in the Singapore market.
The top three marines released Tang EV in Japan and won the first battle in Norway
On July 21 this year, BYD announced its entry into the Japanese passenger car market and launched three models - BYD Atto 3, BYD Dolphin, and Seal. Among them, Atto 3 will be launched first and is expected to go on sale in January 2023. The BYD Dolphin and Seal still need to produce right-hand drive models, which will be released in the middle and second half of 2023, respectively.
After entering the developed markets in Asia and Oceania, BYD also set its sights on Europe. In August last year, BYD Tang EV began to be delivered in Norway. At the end of December last year, BYD announced that the delivery of Tang EV in Norway reached 1,000.
Shu Youxing, general manager of BYD's International Cooperation Division and European Automobile Sales Division, said: "Since its launch in Norway in August last year, Tang EV has been favored and recognized by users. Just last month, Tang EV won the 7-seat SUV in Norway. No. 1 in the market in terms of sales.”
Specifically, BYD Tang is priced at 619,900 kroner (about 435,000 yuan) in Norway. The competing models at this price are mainly Tesla Model Y high-performance models, priced at 599,900 kronor (about 435,000 yuan). 421,000 yuan) and Audi e-tron, priced at 583,000 kronor (about 409,000 yuan).
Since its launch, BYD Tang EV has sold 2,357 units, Audi e-tron has sold 3,958 units in the same period, while Tesla Model Y has sold the most, with more than 14,000 units sold in the same period. Although there are still many gaps compared with Tesla, BYD is also continuing to deploy and wants to expand its overseas product layout and increase sales.
To expand its market presence overseas, BYD announced that it will participate in the Paris Motor Show in October to showcase its latest passenger car and technology strategies. BYD is full of confidence in the increase in sales in the European market. According to "Lloyd's Daily" (an authoritative shipping media), BYD will order 8 LNG dual-fuel vehicle carriers, each capable of transporting 7,700 vehicles, which are expected to be delivered after 2025.
Electrification helps autonomous car companies go overseas
In the era of electrification, the architecture of new energy vehicles is different from that of fuel vehicles. Engines and gearboxes are no longer necessary, and it is no longer necessary to rely on such technologies that have been blocked by major international car manufacturers.
Hybrid and pure electric vehicles have become new trends, and new energy products from domestic automakers can be exported and sold to developed markets. Just taking BYD as an example, it has not only become the leading new energy vehicle company in China but has also been welcomed abroad. From this perspective, the wave of electrification has also greatly accelerated the global marketing strategies of autonomous car companies.
