Google Stadia: Now Available on iPhone and iPad Through Safari

Updated: Aug 8

Apple's longstanding restrictions on cloud gaming platforms have finally loosened, paving the way for a significant development. Google Stadia has landed on iPhone and iPad, offering users a convenient way to access their favorite titles through the Safari web browser.

Breaking free from the confines of the App Store, Stadia bypasses Apple's stringent guidelines by adopting a progressive web app (PWA) approach. This innovative solution allows users to access the Stadia platform through the Safari browser on their iPhones and iPads.

Currently in public beta, the Stadia web app offers a glimpse into the future of mobile cloud gaming. Users can visit Stadia.com and experience a selection of popular titles, including NBA 2K21, DOOM Eternal, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Assassin's Creed Valhalla.

Google acknowledges that the Safari experience is still under development. The company plans to leverage user feedback and data to refine the web app, adding new features and optimizing performance for a seamless gaming experience.

Stadia on iOS shares a strong resemblance with its Android counterpart. The web app allows users to not only play games but also purchase them directly. This streamlined experience eliminates the need for separate apps, providing a unified platform for both gameplay and game management.

The arrival of Stadia on iOS represents a turning point for the cloud gaming industry. It demonstrates the growing potential of web-based solutions as a means to bypass platform restrictions and democratize access to high-end gaming experiences.

For iPhone and iPad users, this development opens doors to a vast library of games, previously unavailable due to hardware limitations or software restrictions. Cloud gaming eliminates the need for powerful hardware, allowing users to enjoy AAA titles on their mobile devices.

With Stadia establishing a foothold on iOS, the stage is set for a more competitive landscape in the cloud gaming market. Existing players like Microsoft xCloud and upcoming contenders like Amazon Luna will likely follow suit, offering users a wider range of options and potentially driving innovation in the industry.

While web-based cloud gaming offers a promising future, some questions remain. The reliance on internet connectivity could pose challenges for users with limited data plans or unreliable connections. Additionally, the full potential of controller support and touch-based controls within the web app remains to be explored.
